Čiurlionis – 150
“After Čiurlionis” – improvisations on the music of M. K. Čiurlionis
Jan Maksimowicz – saxophone
Dmitrij Golovanov – piano
“After Čiurlionis” (“Paskui Čiurlionį”) is the Lithuanian Jazz Union’s dedication to the 150th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. In a cycle of twelve concerts in Lithuanian towns, the music of Čiurlionis will be interpreted and improvised on by two prominent Lithuanian jazz musicians – Jan Maksimowicz (saxophone) and Dmitrij Golovanov (piano). These concerts will be not only a journey through the genius’s work but also a celebration of deep emotion and improvisation, presenting the cultural dialogue between classical and contemporary jazz music.
As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of M. K. Čiurlionis’s birth, his work is still a source of inspiration for many artists. At the “After Čiurlionis” concerts the jazz masters D. Golovanov and J. Maksimowicz invite listeners to experience not only Čiurlionis’s music but also a new interpretation of it, revealed through the language of improvisation and contemporary jazz.
Interpreting music in this way requires not only technical mastery but also deep emotional responsibility, because Čiurlionis’s works often convey subtle emotions and philosophical ideas. “After Čiurlionis” is a musical journey in which the musicians set aside jazz stereotypes and use elements of Čiurlionis’s musical language, such as harmony and motifs, transforming them into new forms. In this way they keep the original spirit of Čiurlionis’s work while adapting it to the context of contemporary jazz and improvisation.
The project is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
