The Baltic States in the spotlight at jazzahead! 2027

Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have been announced as the 2027 partner countries of the international jazz fair jazzahead!. This is a significant event not only for the individual countries' scenes but for the whole Baltic region, which in recent years has become increasingly visible on the international jazz stage.
Held every April in the German city of Bremen, jazzahead! is the largest jazz fair of its kind in Europe and one of the most influential forums for this music. Over two decades it has grown into a carefully shaped and curated platform where representatives of the jazz world meet – from musicians and managers to festival organisers and music publishers. Alongside the fair there are concerts and conferences, and for a few days the whole city turns into one huge festival.
The 2026 edition received special attention, as it was the 20th jazzahead!. In keeping with established tradition, the next partner country was announced during the event: Sweden bade farewell and passed the baton to the Baltic States. The decision reflects the steadily growing visibility of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and their ability to operate not only at national and regional level but internationally as well.
Lithuania has been taking part in jazzahead! for more than a decade. Over this time it has built ties with international partners, the visibility of its artists has grown, and participation in the fair has become an important part of promoting and exporting Lithuanian jazz. For several years now the Baltic States have appeared at jazzahead! not as three separate countries but with a single Baltic Booth, which hosts joint presentations by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. This collaboration has paid off: Baltic jazz is increasingly spoken of as a single phenomenon rather than three separate scenes.
“We have been taking part in jazzahead! since 2013, and for the past five years we have been working purposefully towards becoming a partner of the event. We didn't expect it to happen so soon, or that we would become one of its main focal points. It's a joy, but it's also clear that a lot of work lies ahead. We have the opportunity to show that Lithuanian jazz is alive, diverse and worthy of international attention. This is not only inspiring but also obliges us to keep moving forward,” say representatives of the Lithuanian Jazz Union.
Although Lithuanian musicians did not appear in the official concert programme this year, the country's participation and representation were active. The Lithuanian Jazz Union brought a delegation of fourteen jazz market professionals to jazzahead!, including musicians, managers, and representatives of the press, festivals and a big band. They took part in meetings, presented the Lithuanian scene and made new professional contacts. Such activity often lays the groundwork for future collaboration, joint projects and new initiatives, which make it possible not only to reach wider audiences but also to strengthen the region's identity. This partnership frequently takes on features of cultural diplomacy, too, as music becomes a means of dialogue and improvisation a form of common language.
During the event a Baltic reception was held, attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Germany, Giedrius Puodžiūnas, and the Lithuanian Cultural Attaché in Germany, Irma Šimanskytė, as well as representatives of the Latvian and Estonian embassies and ministries of culture. They welcomed the delegations, stressing the importance of culture in strengthening international ties through music and their countries' own jazz identity. Focus country status at jazzahead! means not only symbolic recognition but also greater opportunities: a curated concert programme, more international attention and new professional connections.
The activities of the Lithuanian Jazz Union are funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
