Meet the Pro: Jasper Høiby

The Lithuanian Jazz Union and the Jazz Cellar 11 club continue their “Meet the Pro” series of educational meetings with world-class performers.
On 7 February, we invite you to learn from London jazz star, double bassist and composer Jasper Høiby.

Born in Copenhagen and based in London, bassist Jasper Høiby has won acclaim since founding his first band in 2005 for his fresh and dynamic approach to jazz, in which intricate compositions blend with spontaneous improvisation. Høiby’s bass sound is the central axis of his music, and his discography includes numerous highly acclaimed albums. He has toured extensively around the world with bands such as Phronesis, Fellow Creatures and Planet B. His music crosses genre boundaries, combining contemporary jazz, elements of European folk music and innovative improvisation.

Jasper Høiby is one of the founders of Phronesis, a band that shook up the European jazz scene a decade ago and became one of Europe’s most acclaimed jazz ensembles. Since 2010, Jasper Høiby has been a leading Edition Records artist, having chosen the label as the exclusive home for his music. His list of collaborators includes some of the most prominent names on the jazz scene, such as Tigran Hamasyan, Jason Lindner, Jeff Ballard, Shai Maestro, Mark Guiliana, Verneri Pohjola, Marius Neset, Django Bates, Sun Mi Hong, Miguel Zenón, Louis Cole, Makaya McCraven, Ben Lamar Gay, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Kit Downes. He has performed at jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals worldwide, and in 2012 he won the Copenhagen Jazz Festival’s “Young Spirit Award”, alongside honorary laureates Jack DeJohnette and Palle Mikkelborg.

The project is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
